Description
Dashiell Hammett. Red Harvest. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1929. First edition. Octavo (7.5 x 5.125 inches; 191 x 129 mm.). [4, blank], [2, half-title ("Some Mystery Stories on the Borzoi List" on verso)], [2, title (copyright on verso)], [2, dedication (verso blank)], [2, contents], [1, fly-title (verso blank)], 3-270, [1, colophon], [5, blank] pages. Title-page printed in orange and black with a skull and crossbones vignette in orange (the orange offset onto preceding page). Publisher's deep red V cloth (smooth). Front cover stamped in yellow with skull and crossbones within a black single-rule border, spine stamped in five panels with decorations in yellow and black against a red background, with the author and title in red against a black panel and the publisher's name at foot in yellow against a red panel, back cover stamped with black rectangular Borzoi Books device in lower right corner; top edge of the text block stained green, other edges rough-trimmed; plain endpapers. In the original first-printing dust jacket, with a plot summary on the rear panel, not review blurbs from The Bookman, The Outlook and The Chicago Post (as described in Layman, who did not see a copy of the first printing). Backstrip just barely dulled, mostly visible along the joints; a few very faint spot-soil blemishes to the rear board; top corner of the rear board gently bumped; a hint of rubbing to the bottom of the boards. Top stain bright, with only a couple of short stretches of narrow chafing; faint spot of discoloration to the bottom of the text block. Dust jacket edges very lightly worn, with a few very short closed tears, none longer than one-quarter inch, along the top edge (three of them in the crown), and a handful of tiny nicks, some associated short diagonal creasing on the top of the front panel and rear flap fold; miniscule notches to the fold edges; edges of the flaps very faintly tanned with a single crimp to top of the front flap; short scratch, about an inch long, to the margin of the rear panel, near the panel fold; verso very lightly tanned, with some faint offsetting from the skull and crossbones ornament. A superlative copy with only trivial flaws, square with a bright, fresh text and a remarkable, completely unrestored, dust jacket; very nearly fine. Housed in a custom clamshell case by the Dragonfly Bindery. The author's first book, originally published in four issues of Black Mask from November 1927 to February 1928. Layman A1.1.a.
