Octavo (7.875 x 5.5 inches; 200 x 140 mm.). , 457, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's dark red cloth, with pictorial wraparound band on silver paper; top edge stained dark blue, other edges untrimmed; original illustrated dust jacket. Foot of spine slightly pushed; mild rubbing to wraparound band, with some crackling to silver surface of paper at joints; boards slightly rounded; trace of discoloration to top edges. Text block tanned; bottom corner slightly bumped; some leaves just starting to flake along bottom edge; discoloration at endpapers from binder's glue. Minor sunning and some light rubbing to dust jacket spine panel, with some mild wear to ends; front and rear panels very faintly rubbed, with a handful of short tears to top edge of front panel and bottom edge of rear panel; some soft creasing along flap folds; tiny nick out of top of rear flap fold, slightly larger one at foot; front flap clipped at upper corner. Near fine. Basis for the 1940 film, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
