    Description

Cornell Woolrich. The Bride Wore Black. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1940. First edition, inscribed by the author to literature professor Donald Yates on the front free endpaper: "To Don Yates / from Con Woolrich." Octavo (8 x 5 inches; 202 x 126 mm.). viii, 312 pages. Publisher's blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, Inner Sanctum device stamped in gilt on the front board; top edge stained dark blue, others trimmed; in the original dust jacket (unpriced, apparently as issued). Backstrip with a few pale blemishes, spine ends softly pushed; board edges just barely rubbed; bottom corner of the front board only slightly canted. Fore-edge of the text block with trace amounts of speckled staining; faint discoloration to the endpapers from the binder's glue. Dust jacket very slightly misfolded; edges and folds with routine light wear; a couple tiny nicks to the upper edges of the panel folds and one to the lower edge of the front flap fold; very shallow marginal crimping to the rear panel; series of small ink smudges on the front flap. A beautiful, near fine copy; house in a custom clamshell case by the Dragonfly Bindery. An Inner Sanctum Mystery, series survey card laid in. Woolrich's first suspense novel after a series of society dramas and the first of his series of "Black Novels," six books with "Black" in the title, published between 1940 and 1948. Basis for the 1968 Fran├žois Truffaut film starring Jeanne Moreau. Donald A. Yates was a Michigan State professor who published translations of Jorge-Luis Borges and other Latin American authors. He developed a friendship with Woolrich, who was a notorious recluse and seldom signed books. Heritage Auctions previously sold the Yates copy of Woolrich's The Black Curtain in 2017. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
