Cornell Woolrich. Children of the Ritz. New York: Boni & Liveright, 1927. First edition. Octavo (7.375 x 5.25 inches; 188 x 132 mm.). 271, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's dark blue cloth, spine and front board lettered and stamped in bluish-green, publisher's device stamped in blind on the backstrip; top edge of text block stained bluish-green, other edges untrimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket, priced $2.00, with reviews of Cover Charge on the rear panel. Spine very gently sloped; backstrip darkened just a shade; some faint blemishes at the bottom of the front board; spine ends a corners with just a touch of wear. Topstain with some barely perceptible uneven fading and just a hint of soiling; a few leaves a little rough at the fore-edge; endpapers with some very brief pencil notations, a couple erased causing a faint discoloration that's hardly noticeable; small previous ownership stamp on the rear pastedown; partially over-opened at page 161; occasional light marginal soiling. Jacket rear panel fold creased; minor ripple across the fore-edge of the front panel into the front flap; the purple ink in the spine panel just a the slightest bit lighter than that of the front panel; a couple instances of trivial edgewear. Nearly fine, a superb copy. Woolrich's second novel. Source for the 1929 First National film starring Dorothy Mackaill. Woolrich worked on the adaptation and stayed on staff at First National but never received screen credit (Mayer and McDonnell. The Encyclopedia of Film Noir (Westport, CT: 2007), p. 39).
