    Carroll John Daly. The Snarl of the Beast. New York: Edward J. Clode, Inc., 1927. First edition, later state dust jacket. Octavo. 318 pages. Publisher's brown cloth stamped in yellow; later state (presumed 1931 reprint) dust jacket. Corners just bumped, minor edgewear, head and foot of spine pushed. Cream endpapers; dampstaining and bleed from dust jacket to endpapers, pencil notations and effaced pencil notations to front free endpaper recto. Internally clean and tight, all pages trimmed; a few pages creased, text block edges toned with minor wear and soiling. Dust jacket unclipped ($2.00); moderate edgewear, creasing and irregular tears to head and foot of spine and edges with some losses, wear reinforced on verso with paper, dampstaining and color bleed to edges and spine, somewhat rubbed, minor foxing to verso. Housed in maroon cloth clamshell case, maroon leather spine label stamped in gilt. Near fine book with fair dust jacket.

    Daly is credited as having created the first hard-boiled crime fiction story. The Snarl of the Beast was Daly's second novel, first serialized in Black Mask earlier that same year. From the Gary Munson Collection
