Association copy, inscribed to thriller and occult author Dennis Wheatley, with his bookplate: "To / Dennis Wheatley / Best wishes from / Emmuska Orczy / London August 28th '35." Octavo. 340 pages. Frontispiece and seven additional inserted plates on coated paper by H. M. Brock. Publisher's full teal cloth; front and spine lettered in gilt; front stamped with pictorial ornament in black, tan and red; rear stamped in black with publisher's device. All edges trimmed. Fairly mild wear to edges, joints and spine ends; corners gently bumped; slight rubbing to boards; very faint sunning to backstrip; spine ends pushed with slight loss of gilt at publisher's name.  Normal age toning to edges of text block with spotting to top and fore-edge. Repaired cut running length of front hinge. About near fine. Debut of one of the earliest "armchair detectives." Queen's Quorum 41. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
