    Description

Arthur Conan Doyle. "The Valley of Fear". First Serialized in Nine Issues of The Strand Magazine. London: George Newnes, September 1914 - May 1915. Nine issues of The Strand Magazine comprising the first printed appearance of Arthur Conan Doyle's forty-seventh Sherlock Holmes story, "The Valley of Fear". Thirty-one illustrations by Frank Wiles, the first of which is in color, eight of which are double page. Seven of the nine issues housed in modern custom printed slipcases with a facsimile of The Strand Magazine cover on front.

October issue covers detached. February issue covers detaching, pages coming loose. Spine repairs with mull reinforcements visible along hinges. Front advertisements mostly removed from the November and January issues. December and January textblocks rippled from water damage. Covers rubbed and soiled, edge wear with small tears, chips, corner bends and creases. Spines darkened, creased, and leaning, some with tears and paper losses. Pages with occasional dampstaining and moderate soiling, few over-opened. Nonetheless, a scarce complete set of the original serial in good to very good condition.
