First edition. Large octavo (9.25 x 6.25 inches; 234 x 160 mm.). [8], 279, [1, blank] pages. Illustrated by Sidney Paget. Dark blue illustrated cloth over beveled boards with titles and illustration in gilt and black; all edges gilt. General light rubbing and wear. Adventures both hinges cracked; light foxing scattered throughout text; bookplate and spots of soiling to the front pastedown. Memoirs cloth rippled on the front board; front hinge starting, rear hinge fully cracked, with backstrip partially separated from the text block; scattered foxing throughout. Very good overall. Housed together in custom slipcase and chemise. Green and Gibson, A10a and A14a, DeWaal 520 & 596. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. From the Collection of Daniel J. King.

    More Information: "The initial twelve tales were collected between covers as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, published in England and America in 1892; and eleven of the second twelve... as The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, published in 1894. If any reader be prepared to name two other books that have given more innocent but solid pleasure, let him speak now - or hold his peace!" (Haycraft, 50).
