    Description

Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes. The Complete Short Stories. London: [1928]. First collected edition.

More Information: Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes. The Complete Short Stories. London: John Murray, [1928]. First collected edition, comprising The Adventures, Memoirs, Return, His Last Bow and Case-Book. Octavo (7.375 x 4.875 inches; 188 x 124 mm.). xi, [1, blank], 1335, [1] pages with publisher's twelve-page catalog inserted at rear. Publisher's red cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, front board with author's facsimile signature stamped in gilt; top edge stained red; in the original dust jacket. Spine just barely leaning; boards very gently bowed; touch of wear to spine ends with light discoloration. Very slightly shaken; text-block sagging just a hair; rear hinge cracked, final leaf of the catalog glued to the inner margin of the free endpaper, extending beyond the text-block with wear to the fore-edge; very slightly over-opened at the title-page; two-inch closed tear to the bottom edge of the title-leaf; occasional light foxing, mostly in the fore-edge margins; page margins very faintly tanned, occasional soft wrinkling to the corners; bookseller ticket to the rear pastedown. Dust jacket edges worn with a handful of closed tears around the joints, up to about one and one-half inches; backstrip very faintly faded; spine ends chipped; light soiling to the front panel. An honest, very good copy of a cheaply-produced book. Scarce in jacket; we were only able to track down one copy recently listed in the trade, in a 2014 catalog from a London bookseller (August, 2018). From the collection of Bob Terry.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
