    Description

Arthur B. Reeve. The Silent Bullet. The Adventures of Craig Kennedy Scientific Detective. New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1912. First edition. Octavo (7.375 x 5 inches; 187 x 127 mm.). [x], 390 pages; frontispiece and five additional illustrated plates after Will Foster inserted throughout. Publisher's dark blue cloth, spine and front board lettered in orange, front board decoratively stamped in orange, green and black; all edges of the text block trimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket, printed on thick paper, priced $1.30 ($1.42 postpaid) on the spine panel. Spine just barely askew; spine ends and corners with just a hint of wear; covers with some negligible soiling, with a couple tiny spots on the rear boar and a tiny red smudge at the base of the spine. Top edge of the text block lightly dust-soiled with a couple fox marks; endpapers light foxed with some minor spotty soiling (mostly on the rear endpapers); old, neat rubber stamp of a (presumed) bookseller code and new price, on the rear pastedown. Dust jacket spine panel faintly tanned, slightly more so on the adjacent portion of the rear panel; spine ends and fold edges lightly worn, with tape affixed to the verso at both spine ends and each edge of the flap folds except the upper front flap, additional piece of tape on the recto at the base of the spine; short closed tear (about three quarters of one inch) on the upper edge of the rear panel, close to the flap fold and addressed by the same piece of tape, few other stray nicks; folds lightly worn, but holding strong and seemingly not in any danger of splitting; trace light soiling with a couple minor bruises. Near fine in a very good, only due to the unnecessary application of tape, dust jacket with an exceptional overall appearance. Rare in jacket, with the only copy listed in Rare Book Hub being the Lackritz copy, which was lacking a substantial portion of the spine panel, sold in 2002 (Christie's). Queen's Quorum 49 ("In 1912 came America's gift to the scientific school of detection - Professor Craig Kennedy..."); a Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
