Anna Katharine Green. The Leavenworth Case. A Lawyer's Story. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1878. First edition. Octavo (7.25 x 4.75 inches; 185 x 123 mm.). iv, 475, [1, blank] pages; two folding facsimile leaves of letter fragments; in-text plans and facsimile handwriting. Publisher's brownish red cloth; front stamped in black; spine lettered in gilt; all edges trimmed. Spine very slightly skewed; mild edge wear to binding, most pronounced at spine ends; a bit of wear at joints with a thin spot in cloth at front; corners softly bumped; some minor rubbing to boards. Edges of text block darkened with a few spots of foxing. Occasional small specks of foxing scattered throughout interior; faint previous owner signature and gift inscription inked to front free endpaper and front flyleaf; some wear and splitting at creases of folding facsimiles, but still sound. Overall, about near fine. Contemporary newspaper clipping laid in, reviewing the work (" of the most exciting and deeply interesting American stories yet published"). Green's first and most well-known novel, introducing her detective Ebenezer Gryce. One of the earliest writers of detective fiction in America, Green would go on to be a bestseller. She was praised by Wilkie Collins and listed as an inspiration by Agatha Christie. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
