    Description

Albert Payson Terhune. The Secret of the Sea-Dream House. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1929. First edition.
Octavo. [x], 340, [3, blank] pages. With publisher's tissue "seal" pages (seal was opened, but the tissue pages are still mainly present) affixed to page 251 and rear free endpaper. Publisher's full black cloth, front board and spine stamped in turquoise. Skewed. In original publisher's dust jacket with publisher's promotional wrap-around band ("A Harper Sealed Mystery"). Cloth spine a bit sunned, creased and soiled, some rubbing to binding, some wear to corners, a few gutters overopened, previous owner's inkstamp on tissue "seal" page affixed to rear free endpaper. Skewed. Jacket spine a bit sunned, some rubbing, light edgewear, and thumbsoiling to jacket, rear jacket panel creased. Very good.

More Information: The Harper "Sealed Mystery" series was a gimmick by the publishers to promote their books by advertising these mysteries as being so compelling, they "sealed" the last few chapters of the mystery within tissue pages, thus daring the reader not to tear open the "seal" and read the solution. If the reader could resist opening the "seal", they were able to return the book to the bookseller for a full refund.

Terhune (1872-1942) was primarily known for his novels about his dogs (the "Lad" series). The Secret of the Sea-Dream House was his only mystery novel.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
