Octavo (7.25 x 4.875 inches; 183 x 123 mm.). 252, [4, publisher's ads] pages. Publisher's full red-orange cloth, spine lettered in black. Original illustrated dust jacket. All edges trimmed. Minor shelf and joint wear to binding; backstrip toned; spine ends pushed; slight bumping to corners; mild rubbing and soiling to boards. Normal age toning to edges and interior of text block; one or two spot stains to edges. Mild, uneven toning to endpapers; dog-ear to one corner; spine split but still sound between pages 160 and 161. General light toning to jacket; minimal soiling and rubbing to exposed panels; very tiny splits starting at ends of front flap fold, head of rear joint; some soft creasing at folds, at spine panel; tiny hole toward middle of spine panel; flaps clipped. Verso stained and covered in small areas of paper residue, where something previously affixed to jacket has been removed. About near fine. With book label of Esme Nicoll, a personal friend of Christie's, affixed to front pastedown. Undated ALS (signed Agatha Mallowan) to Nicoll tipped to front pastedown, detailing arrangements for picking her up from the train station.
