    Description

A[rthur] Conan Doyle. The Valley of Fear. London: George Newnes, Sept. 1914-May 1915. Original monthly serial issue in The Strand Magazine, complete with every story that comprises The Valley of Fear. Nine volumes. Octavo (9.625 x 6.5 inches; 246 x 165 mm.). Various paginations. Numerous full-page and in-text illustrations. Publisher's original engraved light blue wrappers, printed in dark blue and red; December 1914 issue in publisher's full-color wrappers. Housed in custom clamshell, one quarter book-backed navy morocco over navy cloth; spine lettered in gilt with five raised bands. Several issues skewed; overall light, varying amounts of toning, spot-soiling and wear. Most issues appear to have been rebacked, re-jointed or otherwise have wrappers and reattached with majority of original backstrips preserved, some chipping at ends. Light toning to interiors of text blocks. Four issues with part of majority of front and rear ads lacking; three with supplied rear ads inconsistent with front ad pagination. September 1914 with two contents leaves inserted one after the other. April 1915 issue with slip torn out after contents leaf. Very good overall. Full checklist of issues available online.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
