A[rthur]. Conan Doyle. The Sign of the Four. London: 1892. First edition, third issue, with a cancelled title-leaf.

More Information: A[rthur]. Conan Doyle. The Sign of the Four. London: George Newnes, 1892. First edition, third issue, with a cancelled title-leaf, numeral "138" on the contents page complete but still with the misprint "w shed" for "wished" on page 56, line 16, as usual. Octavo (7.375 x 5 inches; 187 x 127 mm.). [2, title (cancel)], [2, contents (verso blank)], 283, [1, blank] pages; frontispiece by Charles Kerr. Publisher's dark red cloth, covers ruled, tooled and stamped in black, spine and front board lettered in gilt; second issue, with "Griffith Farran & Cos / Standard / Library" at the base of the spine. Page edges untrimmed; black coated endpapers. Spine gently leaning; backstrip and board edges slightly darkened; covers with discoloration from deliberate scribbles, either since erased or faded, and writing on the rear board (illegible); spine ends lightly worn with a few small closed tears to the cloth; corners bumped and worn. Front hinge nearly cracked, but still secure; over-opened at the title-page; title-page a little foxed, much more so than the rest of the text; occasional light marginal soiling. About very good. De Waal 283. From the collection of Bob Terry.
