First edition, second issue with typo "13" for "138" in contents and "w shed" for "wished" on page 56, line 16; "Griffith Farran & Cos. Standard Library" on spine. Octavo (7.375 x 5 inches; 188 x 126 mm.). [4], 283, [1] pages. Without 8 pages of publisher's ads present at rear in some copies. Frontispiece by Charles Kerr, on coated paper with tissue guard. Publisher's full dark red cloth; decoratively stamped in black with border and floral corner ornaments; front and spine lettered in gilt. Edges untrimmed. Dark brownish black-coated endpapers. Spine slightly skewed. Minor shelf wear at extremities of binding; spine ends gently pushed and just starting to fray; backstrip and top edge of boards mildly darkened; occasional spots of soiling and general rubbing to boards; corners softly bumped with boards peeking through. Normal age toning to edges of text block; top edge dust-soiled; small ink stain to bottom edge. Some page edges roughly opened; front hinge splitting but still sound; protective tissue at frontispiece toned and offsetting onto title-page; occasional marginal thumbsoiling and spot-staining scattered throughout text block. Very good. Doyle's second Sherlock Holmes novel. Originally appeared in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. Adapted several times for television and film. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
