    A[rthur] Conan Doyle. The Hound of the Baskervilles. London: George Newnes, Aug. 1901-April 1902. Original monthly serial issue in The Strand Magazine, complete with every number that comprises the novel. Nine volumes. Octavo (9.624 x 6.625 inches; 245 x 165 mm.). Various paginations. Numerous full-page and in-text illustrations; opening Sherlock stories preceded by full-page illustrations by Sidney Paget, with in-text illustrations by him. Publisher's original engraved light blue wrappers, printed in dark blue. Text blocks side-stapled. Housed in custom clamshell, one quarter book-backed bright blue morocco over bright blue cloth; spine lettered in gilt with five raised bands. Overall a fair amount of wear, chipping and toning to wrappers; most front wrappers with penciled ownership signatures; at least five issues with one or more wrappers reattached or supplied; four issues with one wrappers starting to split from backstrip. September 1901 issue front wrapper present but detached; November 1901 issue backstrip partly repaired, remaining chips beginning to come up; December 1901 issue with supplied front wrap, with all dates and numbering removed; March 1902 issue rebacked with remains of original backstrip laid down, rear wrap remargined at bottom. Normal uneven toning with some foxing and occasional spot- and thumbsoiling scattered throughout interiors; some rumpling from handling and a few faint tidemarks.
