    Description

A[rthur] Conan Doyle. [Miscellaneous Sherlockiana]. London: George Newnes, August 1892-October 1930. Original monthly issues of The Strand Magazine. Twenty-three volumes. Octavo (9.625 x 6.5 inches; 246 x 165 mm.). Various paginations. Numerous full-page and in-text illustrations, including photographic reproductions. Earlier issues with publisher's original engraved light blue wrappers, printed in dark blue and later in red and dark blue; later issues printed in red and blue on white paper; latest issues in original full-color wrappers. Nineteen issues housed in two custom clamshells, one quarter book-backed navy morocco over navy cloth; spine lettered in gilt with five raised bands. Remaining four issues unboxed. A few issues skewed; varying amounts of toning, spot-soiling and wear to wrappers; several backstrips chipped at ends with some loss to issue and volume numbering, and two completely replaced. Ten issues with one or both wrappers starting to split away; two issues with wrappers mostly or completely detached from text block. General soft creasing two wrappers, some edges beginning to fray; three with small tape repairs; scattered instances of penciling, rusty staples peeking through wrappers. October 1892 issue with ad slip laid in at front; May 1902 issue with apparent insect damage to first leaf of ads; December 1917 issue lacking eighty-eight pages of front ads, only single leaf of ads at rear; October 1923 issue with rust paperclip mark to first leaf. Overall mild toning to text blocks; occasional bumping. About very good. Contains other Doyle publications, features on Doyle and his work, several ads for Sherlock stories, and various other Sherlockiana, including interviews and discussion of film adaptations.
