Publisher's light blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front lettered in black; original illustrated dust jacket; bottom edge untrimmed, all others trimmed. General light shelf wear with some rubbing and a few areas of soiling to cloth, including some brown staining to spine and a small pink mark and smudge to front; spine ends gently pushed; front board slightly bowed. Normal age toning and slight softening to edges of text block; a bit of darkening to top; light scattered speckling to remaining edges with one small stain at bottom. Interior clean and bright with a handful of small dimples toward fore-edge margins from handling. Very faint rubbing to jacket, principally at folds; a few small tears and slight rumpling along bottom edge, longest about half an inch at bottom of spine panel; mild wear along top edges and at spine and flap fold ends. Some rubbing at jacket verso. About near fine in a near fine jacket. Featuring Mason's police detective, Inspector Hanaud, one of the forerunners of Hercule Poirot. Basis for a number of film adaptations. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
