London: George Newnes, 1894. First edition, first issue. Two volumes. Octavo. Various paginations. 104 in-text illustrations in Adventures; frontispiece and eighty-nine in-text illustrations in Memoirs, all by Sidney Paget; initials. Adventures in light blue, Memoirs in dark blue cloth over beveled boards; fronts and spines stamped in black and gilt. All edges trimmed and gilt. Housed in later slipcases of light blue cloth, and dark blue cloth with marbled paper-covered sides; labels on sides and spine stamped in gilt. Adventures spine skewed; both boards coming detached from top, fairly soiled and damp stained, discolored; backstrip wrinkled over spine; wear to corners, edges, head and foot of backstrip with attempted color correction at some edges. Front inner hinge repaired, now split. Some chipping of gilt at text block edges. Foxed with spot soiling throughout; leaves loosening. Memoirs recased with original backstrip retained, seams slightly visible at hinges; extensive color correction; backstip darkened; corners bumped; repaired edge wear. Later endpapers. Moderate marginal foxing throughout text block. Minor dust soiling, shelf wear to slipcases. Fair to good. Adventures lacking "Southampton Street" on front cover, p. 133 "cucaine" for "cocaine," p. 317 "Violent Hunter" for "Violet Hunter," all signs of a first issue. With much later, unrelated signed author letter laid in between front endpapers of Memoirs, dated "March 21, '29." De Waal, 520, 573.
