    Description

    A. Conan Doyle. Pair of Belmore Series Publications. New York: 1892-1893. First U. S. edition.
    A. Conan Doyle. The Doings of Raffles Haw. New York: Lovell, Coryell & Company, [1892]. First U. S. edition, later printing, with Sixth Avenue address at front wrapper. Octavo. 199, [3], [187]-199, [3], [187]-190, 207-255, [1], 3-16 [publisher's ads] pages. Publisher's perfect binding, light brown wrappers, printed in dark brown; all text block edges trimmed. Spine bowed slightly; backstrip creased with a small chip out of foot and splitting starting at foot of front joint; wrappers very lightly rubbed with a tiny amount of soiling; penciled note at head of front wrapper; a bit of soft creasing at corners and toward edges. Text block softly dulled from age; trace amount of rubbing toward corner of bottom edge; penciled note at upper corner of half-title; occasional spot of faint foxing or staining at gutters throughout interior. Near fine. Likely a piracy. Precedes The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and is the first appearance of Holmes stories "The Red-Headed League," "The Boscombe Valley Mystery," and "A Scandal in Bohemia" in book form, though this copy is defective and contains two appearances each of "Scandal" (both incomplete) and "Boscombe," one of which has the stories jumbled together.

[Together with:] My Friend the Murderer. And Other Mysteries and Adventures. New York: Lovell, Coryell & Company, [1893]. First U. S. edition. Octavo. 288 pages. Publisher's perfect binding, light brown wrappers, printed in dark brown; all text block edges trimmed. Backstrip creased, with nicking at joint ends and paper at foot of spine starting to pull up just a bit; light wear along joints; mild rubbing to wrappers; some soft creasing at corners. Text block slightly dulled; minor dust-soiling along top edge of text block; backstrip starting to pull away from text block at hinges, but still sound. Near fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
