    Description

[William Edward Vickers writing as David Durham]. The Exploits of Fidelity Dove. London: Hodder and Stoughton, [n.d., 1924]. The true first edition of this scarce collection of stories featuring a female criminal (it was printed later in 1935 under the author's other pseudonym of Roy Vickers). Octavo. 320 pages. Publisher's full orange cloth, front board ruled in blind, front board and spine lettered in black. In the exceedingly rare original publisher's dust jacket. Cloth spine rubbed and lightly toned. Boards rubbed and soiled. Endleaves offset, evidence of bookplate removal on the front pastedown. Several gutters overopened. Jacket has extensive tape repairs on verso and recto, which, are, unfortunately, amateurishly done. Spine is chipped at head- and tail-caps with some loss of text. Jacket is worn and soiled. Still, a very good example of this famous rarity. Ellery Queen, in his bibliography, The Detective Story, was unaware of this title, only listing the 1935 edition.

[Together with:] [William Edward Vickers writing as David Durham]. Hounded Down. London: Hodder and Stoughton [n.d, 1923]. First edition. Octavo. 288 pages. Publishers' full orange cloth, front board and spine lettered in black. In the rare original publisher's dust jacket. Cloth spine barely sunned, some rubbing to binding, faint creasing to spine. Some foxing to edges of text-block. Jacket spine a bit toned and soiled. Some edgewear, mild chipping and a few short tears to jacket spine and panels. An approximately four-inch tear to the front jacket panel. Jacket somewhat soiled. Still, very good.
