First edition, one of 1,200 copies bound in an original wood print and signed and sealed by van Gulik (this being number 888). Presentation copy, inscribed by van Gulik to legendary author and literary critic, Vincent Starrett, on the front free endpaper: "To Mr. Vincent Starrett, / from the author / R van Gulik / Tokyo, Sept. 1950". Starrett has signed this copy on the verso of the limitation page. Octavo. [10], [xxiv], [1]-237, [3, blank] pages. Publisher's original wood-print boards. In the original publisher's plain dust jacket. Spine of binding a bit bumped at tailcap. Mild rubbing to binding. Some offsetting to front endleaves. Jacket spine toned. Some rubbing, mild occasional edgewear, chipping, thumbsoiling to jacket. A near fine copy with a superb association. Housed in chemise and slipcase. Laid-in are photocopies of two autograph letters signed by van Gulik to Starrett, as well as a newspaper clipping of Starrett's review of this book.
