These stories are the first major collection of Chinese supernatural stories to appear in the West. P'u Sung-Ling (1640-1715) collected and edited nearly 500 supernatural stories throughout his lifetime, and, although he was too poor to publish them in his lifetime, manuscript copies were circulated, and these were later published posthumously. Giles (1845-1935) was a British diplomat stationed in China and became interested in these tales. And, although some of his translations were a bit dry, they accurately reflected the nature of the original tales without Anglicizing them.
