[M. E. Braddon]. Gerard. Or the World, the Flesh, and the Devil. London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., 1891. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author: "To the Author / of the Queen of Bohemia, / with an old friend's / kindest regards. / Richmond. / August. 6. 92." Signed on title-page. Three volumes. Octavo (7.375 x 5 inches; 188 x 125 mm.). [4], 298; [4], 282; [4], 237, [3] pages. Publisher's full green cloth, ruled in blind with spines lettered in gilt; edges untrimmed; original pale yellow endpapers. Fairly mild shelf and joint wear to bindings; spine ends a bit pushed, some starting to fray; boards lightly rubbed; spots of bubbling to first and second volume backstrips; second volume joints beginning to split from top; occasional spot or two of soiling. Normal age toning to edges and interiors of text blocks; top edges dusty. First and second volume joints split or splitting but still sound; second and third volumes almost completely unopened; first volume roughly opened throughout, with a few short tears extending into page margins. One flap of first volume chemise almost completely split away; slipcase a bit bumped and dusty. Very good, almost near fine. Each volume housed in custom green cloth chemise, together in book-backed one-quarter green morocco slipcase. With book labels of Florence and Edward Kaye.
