Octavo (7.9375 x 5.25 inches; 201 x 135 mm.). 320 pages. Publisher's blue cloth, spine and front board lettered in light green, spine stamped in light green, outlining text; top edge of the text block stained green (faded); plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket, priced $2.00. Spine very gently leaning; a couple spots of fading along the crown; spine ends and corners very lightly worn; corners tapped; small purplish blemish on the rear board. Text block sagging just a hair; top stain faded, still visible near the bound edge. Dust jacket spine panel with a soft diagonal (almost vertical) crease, extending the length of the jacket; two creases forming a triangle across the lower portion of the front flap fold; rear panel very lightly rubbed; some negligible wear to the spine ends. An about near fine copy of a title seemingly more difficult to find in excellent shape. Short story anthology. Title story the basis for the 1948 film directed by William Nigh. "Nightmare," originally published as "And So to Death" in Argosy magazine in 1941, served as the basis for two film adaptations, one in 1946, the other in 1956, the latter staring Edward G. Robinson. The Dark Page 300 and The Dark Page II 216. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
