[Cornell Woolrich]. After-Dinner Story. [By] William Irish (pseudonym). London: [circa 1944]. First English edition.

More Information: [Cornell Woolrich]. After-Dinner Story. [By] William Irish (pseudonym). London: Hutchinson, [circa 1944]. First English edition. Octavo (7.125 x 4.625 inches; 181 x 118 mm.). 191, [1, blank pages]. Publisher's dark pinkish-red paper covered boards, spine lettered in black; all edges of the text block trimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket, slightly oversized, just a little taller than the boards, and priced 5/- net. Boards somewhat splayed; board edges a little soiled, small blemish to the front board near the joint. Top edge of text dust soiled; hinges starting, with some discoloration to the free endpapers and first and last leaves from the binder's glue; text very faintly tanned, but the pages are still supple. Dust jacket rubbed; edges a little worn with a few closed tears, one about an inch long at both the front panel and flap fold, both mended with tape on verso; crown reinforced; spine panel text very faintly faded, with a diagonal crease across the top edge; top edge a little crimped; faint blue line across the bottom of the jacket offset from an old jacket protector; lower corner of the front panel clipped, but not affecting the price. Very good. Rare, seemingly so even without a jacket; no auction records found in Rare Book Hub and only two listings returned in WorldCat (both branches of The British Library). Short story anthology featuring "Rear Window" the source for Alfred Hitchcock's immortal 1954 film of the same name starring James Stewart, Grace Kelly and Raymond Burr. Queen's Quorum 97 ("one of the most dynamic talents in contemporary crime writing"). From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
