    Contemporary black checkerboard-grain cloth over green and brown marbled paper-covered boards with black cloth tips. Spine lettered in gilt. Spine extremities lightly rubbed; board edges rubbed, with a few small areas of paper loss; boards exposed at corners. Binding becoming a little loose and over-opened in a few places. Slight browning; several leaves with small mostly marginal stains. Pages 7/8 with diagonal crease from the top edge, touching but not affecting a few letters; tiny tear at lower edge of pages 41/42 and upper edge of pages 67/68; lower corner of pages 29/30 and 31/32 in the "Notenanhang" creased, with a tiny tear.
    Tiny blue ink stamp on verso of title: "Printed in Germany." Ink signature on front pastedown: "J. L. Hibberd / [flourish]." Slip of paper tipped to front free endpaper, with a Typed Note: "Ex Libris / Dr. Isaac Lloyd Hibberd / 2 Jan 1904 - 14 Jul 1965. / Eminent Musicologist. / With his signature." Pencil underlining throughout text (one line in red on page [v]); a few neat pencil annotations. Page numbers written neatly in ink on the contents leaf (page [iii]) of the "Notenanhang."     Hungarian born American musicologist Otto Gombosi (Ottó János, 1902-1955) moved to Berlin in 1921 to study musicology at the university, receiving his doctorate in 1925. In 1939, he settled in the United States, where he taught at various institutions, notably the University of Washington, the University of Chicago, and Harvard University. His dissertation on Jacob Obrecht was published in 1925. "Gombosi held a prominent position among his musicological contemporaries during the next 30 years. In his dissertation he applied style criticism to Obrecht (whose complete works were then being edited by his teacher [Johannes] Wolf) throwing new light on the music of the so-called Netherlandish school. Gombosi further illuminated the characteristics of this school by transcribing for the first time the works of many of Obrecht's contemporaries [including Guillaume Dufay, Philippe Caron, Johannes Ghiselin, Johannes Tinctoris, and Alexander Agricola], made available in the musical appendix to the volume. Lute music of the Renaissance became another major research topic, resulting in a monograph on [Valentin] Bakfark (1935) and an edition of the Capirola Lutebook (1955)...Perhaps his greatest contribution to scholarship was his concern with musical structure. It was the overall plan of organization that fascinated him, and the most telling way of barring music and clarifying the texture of polyphony in order to penetrate to this plan. His method of metrical analysis is perhaps most readily accessible in his edition of the Capirola Lutebook, a pilot work in the field. His radical and provocative ideas continue to have influence in the analysis of early music" (F. W. Sternfeld in Grove Music Online).


    Flemish church musician and composer Jacob Obrecht (1457 or 1458-1505) was Europe's leading composer of cyclic masses in the 1480s and 1490s, of which he wrote nearly three dozen. In addition he left a sizeable oeuvre of motets and songs, many of which continued to circulate widely, along with his most famous masses, during the first half of the 16th century. In the last years of his life Obrecht was frequently mentioned in one breath with Josquin des Prez. The latter was to outlive him by 16 years, however, and has come to be seen as the more significant representative of his generation" (Rob C. Wegman in Grove Music Online).
