Twelve Grand Concertos in Seven Parts by Handel

George Frederick Handel. Twelve Grand Concertos in Seven Parts for Four Violins, a Tenor Violin, a Violoncello with a Through Bass for the Harpsichord. Publish'd by the Author. London: John Walsh, [1740, 1741]. First edition of the first volume ("Violino Promo Concertino") and the fifth volume ("Viola"), early reprints of the remaining five volumes. Together, seven folio volumes. Approximately 12.25 x 8.75 inches. All parts without blanks; Subscriber's names and Privilege in volume I, Privilege in volume V, the rest lacking these leaves, indicating that they are from the 1741 reprinted edition. Uniformly bound in near contemporary black morocco backstrips over blue cloth boards, boards ruled in blind, spines ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments. Some wear to bindings, a few neat ink notes or notations throughout, some toning and offsetting in text, a few short tears in text. A very good set. Smith indicates that the 1741 reprint was bound without the Subscriber's names and the Privilege leaf, and that the 1740 first had them in each part. Although volume V lacks the Subscriber's names leaf, it does have the conjugate Privilege leaf. Smith, p. 222, 1, 2. From the collection of a gentleman of New York.
