    Description

A Wonderful Association Copy of Grove's Music Dictionary, with George Bernard Shaw's Annotations

[George Bernard Shaw]. George Grove. A Dictionary of Music and Musicians. London: Macmillan, 1879, 1880, 1883. First edition, lacking only the fourth appendix volume. With a card mounted to the front pastedown, reading: "G. B. Shaw / with best wishes from / William & Francis Archer / Xmas 1885." All three volumes have several instances of ink annotation by George Bernard Shaw. Octavo. Contemporary quarter red morocco over olive-colored cloth. Volume one is over-opened, with the front and rear gatherings separating at the hinges. The morocco spine label of this volume is also peeling. All three volumes exhibit rubbing to extremities, darkened spines, scuffing to cloth and mild offsetting to endpapers. Generally very good.
A complete list of Shaw's annotations is laid in.
William and Frances Archer were close friends with George Bernard Shaw. William Archer (1856-1924) was a prominent theatre critic.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
