London: Button & Whitaker's Music Warehouse, [c1800.] Krown & Spellman retail: $1250. 8vo. 2 volumes of 6. [2],60. [2],60pp. Early 19th century sheep-backed marbled boards, spines perished, covers off, in cloth box; some soiling, dampstaining, and foxing. Gatherings and pages detaching.
Two contemporary erotic watercolors have been added to the blank versos of the title pages illustrating songs in the collections. "When the full Organ" by Broderip shows full length figures of a man and a woman in contemporary dress in a room with candelabras. The man's member is fully exposed and tumescent; the lady with her breasts and lower extremities fully exposed, is touching her pudenda with one hand and pointing to his swollen member with the other.
"Sweetly let's enjoy" by Dibdin is illustrated by a man and woman in contemporary dress in an amorous embrace. She has her breasts and lower body fully exposed and is leaning backwards on the gentleman standing behind her, who is supporting her with one hand while fondling her breasts with the other.
Both watercolors are made with some skill by a talented and uninhibited illustrator. From the Krown & Spellman Collection.

    More Information:

The "catch" is like a round but the parts are written out as one melody and not in score. The text is constructed so that certain combinations of words brings forth comical and often indecent effects. The Catch Club was founded in London in 1761 for the performance of these songs. The membership is a Who's Who of the time including; George the Fourth, the Dukes of Cumberland, York, Cambridge, and Sussex. It continues to our day. The 'Apollonian Harmony' first appeared in the 1790's with a Henry Thomson imprint and was reprinted at the turn of the century by Button & Whittaker.

Warren (c1730-1794) was the secretary of the Nobleman's and Gentleman's Catch Club from its foundation in 1761 until his death. He spent much of his life acquiring, copying and publishing music, both for the Catch Club and for his own benefit. He was responsible for the most complete collection of glees, canons, catches and madrigals published in the 18th century, which became known as 'Warren's Collection' and was a standard source of such music for many years. In addition to hundreds of contemporary pieces it contained a number of older works. The Apollonian Harmony, probably also compiled by Warren, contained many 16th-century madrigals.        [RLIN--CUBUGLAD33811985-C].

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
