    Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. [Thomas Shelton, translator]. The History of The Valorous and VVitty-Knight-Errant, Don Quixote, of the Mancha. Translated out of the Spanish; now newly Corrected and Amended. London: Printed by Richard Hodgkinsonne, for Andrew Crooke, 1652. [bound together with:] Edmund Gayton. Pleasant Notes Upon Don Quixot. London: Printed by William Hunt, 1654. Two works in one quarto volume. [8], 137, [5], 138-214, 216-244, 244-274 leaves; [14], 290 pages. Three title pages (The History being divided in two parts) with woodcut devices, ornamental head- and tail-pieces, and large decorated initials. Bound in full mottled calf with gilt lozenge on both boards. Sympathetically rebacked, five raised spine bands with gilt lettered leather title label, gilt rules and decorations in compartments. Endpapers renewed.

    Boards rubbed and crazed, small vertical crack in rear board where it meets new joint. Small ink notes and gift inscription dated 1861 on first title page; small ink annotation on last page of Pleasant Notes. Last leaf (Aaaa3) of The History with small vertical cuts in lower margin, not affecting text. Pages with edge wear, occasional corner bends and few minor tears. Dampstaining, foxing, and light soiling. Very good copies of both books bound together in a handsome volume.
