Volume 1 has 4 plates of alchemical apparatus at the end, lacking a plate of students summoning Paracelsus (see Duveen). Volume 2 has a frontispiece and 6 plates of various subjects including whales, natives of Greenland, canoes, magical workings and experiments, and a skeleton in a casket. Contemporary vellum peeling from boards made up of printer's waste. Loss to tail of spine. Paper evenly age-toned with some foxing. Old owner's signature on front paste-down, which is detaching. Front hinge broken. Occasional light burn marks affecting text. Fair. From the Krown & Spellman Collection.


    More Information: Rare, both parts of this encyclopedic work on occultism, experimental science and natural history. Duveen notes these volumes form a "sort of Encyclopedia of Curiosities in Medicine, Natural Sciences, Chemistry, Magic and even Politics. Four of the remarkable plates represent large distilling apparatus..." p4. Ferguson notes Axtelmayer was "a curious personage, skilled in physics and Ïconomics, who had traveled much and wrote a good deal." Fictuld (as quoted in Ferguson 1,4) "says that all his labour is nothing but 'scribblement, sophistical freaks and gnat-catching, with which he had better stayed at home." There are sections on printing, bookbinding, music, numismatics, etc. Acxtelmeyer is also the author of a work on magic "Hocus Pokeria.." Caillet 49 (letzer Theil only).
