One of the Most Beautifully Illustrated Seventeenth-Century Books on Divination and Dream Interpretation

Richard Saunders. Saunders Physiognomie, and Chiromancie, Metoposcopie, the Symmetrical Proportions and Signal Moles of the Body, Fully and accurately explained; with their Natural Predictive Significations both to Men and Women. Being Delightful and Profitable: with the Subject of Dreams made plain: Whereunto is Added The Art of Memory. London: H. Brugis for Nathaniel Brook, 1671. The Second Edition, very much Enlarged. Folio. 11 x 7.5 inches. [xxvi], 160, [ii], 155-156, 161-377, [1], [xii, including ads] pages. With the rare engraved portrait and one full-page plate. With errors in pagination. Pages 42 and 47 are blank (a seemingly unique printing error; facsimiles of missing pages are laid-in). Nineteenth-century full brown calf, covers decoratively ruled in gilt and blind and paneled in blind, with armorial central motif in blind (three boar's heads with the motto, "Virtue," possibly being the arms of the MacDiarmid family), spine decoratively stamped in blind, with dark brown gilt morocco lettering label. Marbled endleaves. Some minor wear to binding, spine a bit sunned. Still, a fine copy of this unusual work.

    More Information:

"Saunders work on moles was the apotheosis of this divinatory art..." (Seligman, page. 256). Richard Saunders (1613-1675) was a medical practitioner and astrologer, who was widely read in his day. His first publication was Physiognomie, and Chiromancie... which is profusely illustrated and was expensive to produce. He then produced a second edition, much expanded and even more expensive to produce (the above book).
