    More Information:

Comiers (d.1603) was canon of Embrun, professor of mathematics at Paris, and employed for some time at the Journal des Savans, before becoming blind. He wrote a number of scientific works on comets, spectacles, cryptography as well as a work on prolonging life and this popular treatise on divination. He was a student of the Kabbalah, whose mathematical resources are utilized in this work. Though Thorndike suggests that the oracular literature was more studied as an antiquarian activity, our author obviously intended this work to assist the student in using the texts for predictions. We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
