    More Information:

Nicolas de Bonneville, bookseller and man of letters, (1760-1828). His work on Freemasonry was first published in French in 1788. It was divided into two parts. The first, Scottish Freemasonry compared with the three professions and the Secret of the Templars of the 14th century and the second the Identity of the four pledges of the Society of Sant Ignace, and the four steps of the Freemasonry of Saint John. "His masonic theory was that the Jesuits had introduced into the symbolic Degrees the history of the life and death of the Templars, and the doctrine of vengece for the political and religious crime of their destruction; and that they imposed upon four of the higher Degrees the four vows of their congregation." [Mackey]. Bode (1730-1793) "One of the most distinguished Freemasons of his time...In 1790 he joined the Order of the Illuminati, obtaining the highest Degree in its second class, and at the congress of Wilhelmsbad he advocated the opinions of Weishaupt. No man of his day was better versed than he in the history of Freemasonry..." [Mackey]. The text contains a reprint of the first part of Samuel Pritchard's 'Masonry Dissected' in English. Wolfsteig II, 35728. Kloss 1928. French ed.: Caillet 1408, Dessubre 107, Chomarat/Laroche 146. Fesch 177.
