    More Information:

[Occult]. Henr[i] Corn[eille] Agrippa. La Philosophie Occulte. La Haye: Chez R. Chr. Alberts, 1727. First edition, large paper copy , in French of this important (and prohibited) set on the occult.

Large paper copy. Approximately 8.75 x 5.25 inches. Two octavo volumes. [xi], 427, [1, blank]; [ii], 317 pages. With twelve engraved plates inserted throughout, and numerous engraved illustrations. Contemporary full calf, boards double-ruled in gilt. Both volumes rebacked in later calf, spines double-ruled in blind and numbered in gilt, five raised bands, burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels. Binding worn, headcap of volume I chipped, hinges of volume I cracked, second gutter of volume II cracked, endleaves and blanks chipped and worn, some light soiling and intermittent foxing in text, bookplates removed front front pastedowns. Still, a good set of this rare and unusual work.

Agrippa (1486?-1535) was an influential German philosopher and theologan. The original edition of this work was written in about 1510, but its publication was delayed until 1531-1533. It is a defense of magic and its use in bringing men closer to a knowledge of nature and of God. However, it was a controversial work, and led to charges of black magic and imprisonment by the Inquisition.

    Thorndike V, 134-136. Caillet 95. Cornell 10.

From the John McLaughlin/Book Sail Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
