    Spry (d. c1796) recieved an excellent education and was intended for the church but left university to study medicine. He came to the attention of the medical world with the publication of his treatment of the curious case of a man of 94 years of age who swallowed molten lead. He left general practice and visited the principal medical schools of Europe. He received a master of arts and doctor of medicine degree as well as doctor of philosophy and liberal arts at Leiden 20th January 1768. "He wrote Latin with a great facility and elegance; his knowledge of Greek was considerable, and he read Hebrew and Arabic."
