    Seventy-four Engraved Anatomical Plates
    including "A Humane Body Opened"

    Samuel Collins. [William Faithorne, engraver]. A Systeme of Anatomy, Treating Of the Body of Man, Beasts, Birds, Fish, Insects, and Plants... [London] In the Savoy: Thomas Newcomb, 1685. First edition. Two folio volumes. [24], lvi, [4], 678; [6] 679-1263, [16], 73 plates, [26, index]. Additional engraved title page and frontispiece portrait of author in volume one pasted together back to back, seventy-four engraved anatomical plates, title pages in red and black, ornamental head-pieces and large decorated initials. Seventy-three of the plates are grouped at the end of volume two with facing explanatory texts, while the other plate (not found in all copies) is inserted between pages 934 and 935. Explanatory text for plate four is a cancel pasted over the original text. Blank paper slip pasted over lower section of explanatory note for plate 21.
    Full brown calf, six raised spine bands with gilt lettered leather title labels and extra gilt floral designs in compartments, board edges with gilt decorative lines, textblock marbled. Joints and spine ends restored. Armorial bookplate of "William Trumbull Esq" and holograph ink shelf numbers [?] "7. A." on front pastedowns. Boards rubbed, scuffed, and chipped; old leather repairs to front cover of volume one, corners bumped; hinges cracked, occasional soiling, dampstaining, pages lightly cockled, creases. Volume one: Front free endpaper coming loose with tears and minor paper loss. Tear in title page affecting "Systeme", and small paper lifts in background of frontispiece portrait. Volume two: First few leaves with small track in inner margin near head from biopredation, rear free endpaper loose, tears and paper loss in rear blank fly-leaf, five inch tear in plate 69 with small piece of tape on its verso. Otherwise in very good condition.

    A very good copy of Collins' magnificently illustrated two volume masterwork on the comparative anatomy of both humans and animals.
