Pott's Classic on Work on Fistula in Ano

Percivall Pott. Remarks on the Disease, Commonly Called A Fistula in Ano. London: L. Hawes, W. Clarke, and R. Collins, 1765. First Edition. Octavo. xi, 115, [1, blank], [1, ads], [1, blank] pages. With a full-page engraved plate. Contemporary full mottled calf, gilt burgundy morocco lettering label on spine. Skilfully rebacked to style, preserving the contemporary label. Corners skillfully repaired. Some wear and scuffing to binding, label chipped with minor loss, marginal offsetting to endleaves, rear hinge starting, some toning in text, some occasional intermittent foxing and soiling in text, two leaves (pages 97 to 100) with shorter margins at fore-edge (most likely a printer's error). Front blank apparently neatly removed. Still, a very good copy. With the ownership signature of E. A. Holyoke, and American doctor and instructor who was an early proponent of inoculation (signature is on front free endpaper).
"Percival Pott, of London, was a surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital from 1744-1788. Through a fall in the street, he sustained the particular fracture of the fibula which bears his name, and, taking up authorship while confined to his bed, he began to produce in rapid succession such masterpieces as his treatises on hernia, head injuries, hydrocele, fistula in ano, fractures and dislocations..." [Garrison, History of Medicine, p. 344].
This book is a prized classic and a foundation work of colon-rectal surgery.
    Norman 1733.
