    Description

Casserius' Work on the Vocal and Auditory
    Organs with Beautiful Anatomical Illustrations

Julius Casserius. De Vocis Auditusque Organis Historia Anatomica... Tractatibus Duobus Explicata ac Variis Iconibus Aere Excusis Illustrata. Ferrara: Victorius Valdinus, 1600 [1601]. First edition. Folio. Approximately 15.5 x 10.5 inches. 191; 126, [ii] pages. With two portraits and thirty-four anatomical copper-plate illustrations inserted throughout. In contemporary full vellum, ink notes on spine. Binding worn, joints cracking (with modern amateurish tape repairs), hinges cracking, some soiling and a few ink notations to a few leaves, two previous ownership signatures on front endleaves. Still, a very good copy of this beautiful book.
The work consists of two treatises: the first on the vocal organs, and the second on the auditory organs. This work, and a work by a teacher of Casserius published the same year and the first monographs published on the larynx. "A masterpiece of book illustration and the most beautiful book ever published on the ear and throat in man and in lower animals". "Casseri... investigated the structure of the auditory and vocal organs in most of the domestic animals. The book includes a description of the larynx more accurate than that of any previous author" (Garrison-Morton). "Medical historians rank the accuracy and artistry of the illustrations in this and other works of Casserio in the same category as those of Vesalius, with Casserio setting the standard in copperplates as Vesalius had done with woodcuts" (Eimas). Garrison-Morton 286 and 1540. Graesse, II, p. 62. Choulant-Frank, p. 223. Eimas 397.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
