Two first edition treatises on internal medicine and fevers by a follower of Paracelsus.

Peucer, a celebrated physician and mathematician, was born at Bauzen in Lusatia in 1525. Student of Erasmus Reinhold, Jacob Milich, and Georg Rheticus, became professor of higher mathematics at Wittenberg. He married a daughter of Melanchton whose principles he contributed to diffuse, and whose works he published at Wittemberg in 1601. Was imprisoned for ten years, on account of his opinions, he wrote his thoughts on the margins of old books which they gave him for amusement, making his ink of burnt crusts of bread, infused with wine. He died at 78, in 1602. He wrote several tracts, De praecipus divinationum generibus (1584), Methodus curandi morbis internos (1614), De Febribus (1614), Vitae illustrium medicorum, Hypotheses astronomicae,..... - (Chalmers).

On Bruele's Praxis medicinae theorica et empirica: First published by Plantin at Antwerp in 1579, this work treats various diseases systematically, describing for each illness first the characteristics, then the treatment, and finally the medication. Many later editions by Plantin in Antwerp and Raphelengius in Leiden followed, including the present work (1612), all reprints of the first edition. Of the author little is known, except that his real name was Walter Bryant. - (AF).
