    More Information:

Ambroise Paré (c. 1510-December 20, 1590) was a French surgeon. He was the great official royal surgeon for the kings Henry II, Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III and is considered as one of the fathers of surgery. He was a leader in surgical techniques and battlefield medicine, especially the treatment of wounds. He was also an anatomist and the inventor of several surgical instruments. His writings did more than anybody else to raise the previously poor reputation of surgery.

Spiegel (1578-1625) studied medicine and philosophy at Louvain, and then went to the University of Padua to study under Casseri and Fabricius. He became an expert in anatomy, surgery, and botany. In 1616 he was appointed to the chair of anatomy and surgery at Padua.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
