Maximilien Luce. Autograph Letter Signed with Drawings.
"Luce." Three pages (of a bifolium) in French, with two drawings in ink, 4.25" x 6.5", [Paris?]; Tuesday, January 1, 1918. In this letter to an unnamed correspondent Luce is requesting aid of some sort for his brother-in-law, Edouard Bouin, "You said you could be useful to me or my brother-in-law, who's returning to Bordeaux, when you visited my studio. His état de service is attached." After listing his brother-in-law's duties to France, Luce asks his correspondent, "See what you can do."

On the back of the letter, Luce lists his brother-in-law's address and, more importantly, two ink sketches, one of a man on a horse drinking in a lake, and the other of a group of six men standing and sitting around a table.

Maximilien Luce (1858-1941) was a French Neo-impressionist artist, known for his paintings, illustrations, engravings, and graphic art, as well as for his anarchist activism. Starting as an engraver, he then concentrated on painting, first as an Impressionist, then as a Pointillist, and finally returning to Impressionism.

Condition: The letter has the usual folds, along with ink bleeding through to the versos of the sketches, without affecting text of letter; very slight tear at bottom edge of middle crease; otherwise good.
