First Edition in the Scarce First Issue Dust Jacket

Maurice Sendak. Where the Wild Things Are. New York: Harper & Row, 1963. First edition, first issue jacket (with $3.50 price intact and no mention of the Caldecott Award on the jacket flaps, nor with the metallic medal sticker on the front of the jacket). Oblong quarto. [40] pages. Illustrated in color by the author. Original green cloth-backed pictorial boards, patterned endpapers, dust jacket. Jacket slightly toned, with some rubbing and minor wear, and a small circular tear on the spine; price crossed out in pencil, but still legible. Light rubbing and slight sunning to edges of book. Near fine.

The first issue jacket for this book is exceedingly scarce. When the book won the Caldecott Award very soon after publication, the books were immediately issued new jackets emblazoned with the award medal and new blurbs.
