Description

    With Maurice Leloir's Lovely Illustrations

Maurice Leloir [illustrator] and Jerôme Doucet. La Chanson des Mois. Reims: L. Michaud, 1904.

First edition, limitation unknown, as this copy without a limitation page (although likely one of 150 copies "sur velin d'Arches," with an extra suite of the illustrations "sur Chine"). Folio (16.125 x 11.75 inches, 410 x 300 mm). Unpaginated. Originally published with forty color illustrations on thick wove paper mounted on guards, and a suite of uncolored engravings on thinner Chine; this copy lacking four of the color plates. Half-title with watercolored illustration and very faint signature of the artist, pictorial title, and colored heliogravure illustrations by Maurice Leloir; text by Doucet. Text in French.

Half-bound in modern navy blue morocco over marbled paper boards; five raised bands, gilt lettering, rules, and decorations to spine. Leather scuffed a bit, with minor wear to extremities. A volume re-assembled from the original sheets, some of which have been trimmed considerably and mounted on newer paper; a few have apparently been framed and matted at some point, with a couple (including the title page) showing some toning across the image area. Four color plates missing: the "title cards" for the January, March, June, and November chansons. All text present. Ten plates trimmed and mounted on recent paper. Last twenty-seven of the black and white engravings at the rear with half-circle water stain at the fore-edge, measuring approximately an inch and a half by three-quarters of an inch. One of these engravings on Chine with a repaired horizontal tear across almost two-thirds of the sheet, through the image area. Though a somewhat haphazard reconstruction of the original work, the plates are still quite lovely, with the delicate colors still bright and vibrant. Scarce.

Twelve odes, one for each month, accompanied by dreamy illustrations of mildly erotic nymph-like creatures. From the Estate of John McLaughlin.
