Maurice, Compte de Saxe (1696-1750) was a Saxon soldier in French service who became a Marshal and later Marshal General of France. This work is a classic in the art of war. In it, Saxe advanced a number of original ideas, but the most valuable contribution was to subject military affairs to reasoned criticism and intellectual treatment. The ensuing military doctrines were perceived as forming a definitive system. (Wikipedia).
