    Description

Matilda Charlotte Houstoun. Texas and the Gulf of Mexico; or Yachting in the New World. London: John Murray, 1844. First edition. Two 8vo volumes. viii, 314; viii, 360 pp and 16 pages of ads. Frontispieces, illustrations. Bound in original blue cloth over boards with blindstamped yacht designs to the front boards, and gilt lettering to spines, reading "Yacht Voyage to Texas," as per Streeter (1506). Bindings slightly cocked. Both hinges broken on volume two, and boards and spine, though still present, have become detached. Frontispiece and title page of volume two are also detached. Some foxing throughout. Bookplates on front pastedowns. Although the bindings are in only good condition (and are a prime candidate for rebinding), internally the books are very good.

Beautifully illustrated with ten stunning engraved plates, including an image of a mountainous Houston rendered by an artist who had clearly never visited the city. Account of a wealthy British woman who visited Texas with her husband on their private yacht. Streeter calls the work "a pleasant and quite readable account of life at Galveston, with an excursion to the 'up country,' of a wealthy English couple in the winter of 1843-1844. There is the usual conventional sketch of recent Texas history, and its climate, production, and so on, but the interesting parts have to do with daily life, talks with Captain Elliott, envoy for England, mosquitoes, snipe shooting and the like."

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
