Description

"Its chief object was to show that women were not the playthings of men..."

Mary Wollstonecraft. A Vindication of the Rights of Woman: with Strictures on Political and Moral Subjects. Boston: Peter Edes for Thomas and Andrews, 1792.

Early American edition, published the same year as the first English edition. Octavo. [xvi], [17]-340, [2, blank] pages.

Contemporary calf with red leather spine label lettered in gilt. Binding worn and rubbed. Crazing to spine leather. Minor spotting and foxing throughout. Previous ownership inscription on half-title. Four small areas of wax remnants and crossed-out ink on verso of half-title. Rear free endpaper almost detached. Very good condition.

In Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Wollstonecraft "argued for equality of education for both sexes ... and co-education. It was a rational plea for a rational basis to the relation between the sexes... Its chief object was to show that women were not the playthings of men but ought to be their equal partners, which they could be only if they were educated the same way" (Printing and the Mind of Man 242). From the Judith Kaplan Collection of Women's History.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
