Mark Twain. The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, and Other Sketches. Edited by John Paul [Charles Henry Webb]. New York: C. H. Webb, 1867. First edition, first printing, with single leaf of advertisements on cream-yellow paper inserted between front flyleaf and title-page, and unbroken type on pages 21, 66, and 198. Twelvemo (6.625 x 4.5 inches; 170 x 113 mm). 198, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's green cloth over beveled boards, spine and front lettered in gilt, front with gilt-stamped frog ornament at lower left corner oriented diagonally upward, rear board with same frog stamped in blind; all text block edges trimmed; brown coated endpapers. Spine ends slightly pushed and just starting to fray at a couple of spots; hint of rubbing to boards, with some small areas of light soiling and a few very faint, surface-level scratches and scuff marks; top edges of boards a bit darkened and dust-soiled; trace of wear to bottom edges and corners, which are also very gently tapped. Hinges showing minimal wear, with rear hinge just starting to crack toward head; a couple of soft creases at upper corner of rear free endpaper. Text block edges softly darkened, with spotting along top edge; specks of faint foxing scattered throughout interior, most pronounced at first and last several leaves of text block; a few instances of faint, marginal thumbsoiling; a few leaves showing evidence of previous dog-earing; one gutter a touch over-opened. Still, a very nearly fine copy of the author's first published book, collecting 27 sketches previously published in various magazines and newspapers. Housed in custom black cloth chemise and book-backed slipcase. BAL 3310; Queen's Quorum 7 ("The first important foreshadowing of crime-in-ascendancy in the short story... This acknowledged classic of legend and folklore is an early example of the confidence game in fiction"); Zamorano Eighty 17.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
